Hollow core slabs

Hollow Core Slabs manufactured in Nelspruit

Hollow core slabs are prestressed and precast concrete elements, manufactured using long line steel casting beds. They are typically 1200mm wide and between 150mm – 250mm deep.

Spans can be around 12m, and applications range from individual houses to residential apartments, office buildings, hotels, schools, hospitals, supermarkets, industrial units and car parks.

Advantages

  • Fast installation by crane, no site labour required
  • Up to 12m spans with no temporary propping or support walls/beams
  • No concrete pump or structural concrete to be poured on site, Hollow Core slabs are delivered and installed, structurally complete
  • Walls on the slab, can be built immediately after slab installation is complete

  • Cantilevers don’t need propping or additional top steel
  • Off-site manufacture improves the quality of the product, since work is carried out under closely controlled factory conditions, where it is not affected by on-site trades or the weather.
  • Quality, since the slabs are factory-made the soffit is of high quality with no need for plastering.

  • Time and speed, erection undertaken by our trained crew, saving customers the cost of formwork and curing period of in-situ slabs.
  • Fire Resistance Level (FRL), structural adequacy 180 minutes; Integrity 90 minutes; Insulation 90 minutes.
  • Elimination of long and continuous concrete pouring operations.

  • Cost effective, taking the cost of concrete, propping, curing period for concrete, hiring of scaffolding and form works, there is a significant cost benefit of up to 20% using our hollow core slabs as opposed to conventional In-situ concrete.
  • Reduced construction time.
  • Ready to use working platforms.
  • Elimination of temporary structures including propping allowing the finishes to take place at the lower levels.

  • No plastering of soffits required.
  • Raceways are provided for plumbing trades and/or electrical heating through the continuous natural ducts.
  • Dry installation, aside from wetting and grouting joints.
  • Increased lifespan, more resistant to corrosion and cracking.
  • The panels are effective at saving energy in both cold and hot climates due to having a high thermal co-efficient.

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

Hollow core is a clean and efficient construction method which reduces the impact of building activities on the environment. The small amount of waste produced is recycle and used in other precast products.

  • Fewer greenhouse gases are emitted during the hollow core production process as opposed to the other conventional building methods.
  • Less concrete is used due to the nature of hollow core slabs.
  • Weather is less impactful, as construction can continue during less favourable weather conditions.
  • Less of an environmental impact due to the methods being cleaner and more efficient.
  • The panels are effective at saving energy in both cold and hot climates due to having a high thermal co-efficient.
  • It is possible to recover and re-use the precast flooring element for other low budget and smaller projects. Hollow core is the only precast flooring element that can be recovered from a building and re-used.
